The top AI announcements from Google I/O | TechCrunch

Google’s going all-in on AI — and it wants you to know it. During the company’s keynote at its I/O developer conference on Tuesday, Google mentioned “AI” more than 120 times. That’s a lot! But not all of Google’s AI announcements were significant per se. Some were incremental. Others were rehashed. So to help sort […]

Former top SpaceX exec Tom Ochinero sets up new VC firm, filings reveal | TechCrunch

Former senior SpaceX executive Tom Ochinero is teaming up with SpaceX alum-turned-VC, Achal Upadhyaya, and one of Sequoia’s top finance leaders, Spencer Hemphill, on a new venture called Interlagos Capital, TechCrunch has learned.

There is little public information available about Interlagos, and the trio did not respond to TechCrunch’s request for comment. The company was formally incorporated in the state of Delaware on March 7, and it was registered as an out-of-state company with the state of California only days ago on April 11. Ochinero, Upadhyaya and Hemphill are all listed on the documents. The principal address is in El Segundo, California.

A trademark application for “Interlagos” was filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on April 4. That application lists an address identical to the one found on the company’s business registration. The application states that the company will deal in “venture capital services; venture capital funding services, namely, providing financing to emerging and start-up companies.”

Ochinero departed from SpaceX in February after a nearly ten-year stint at the company, where he eventually became senior vice president of commercial business. In that role, he helped SpaceX grow into the undisputed global lead in commercial launch. People familiar with the matter told CNBC at the time that Ochinero was resigning “to attend to a family medical matter.”

With Interlagos, he is teaming up with another SpaceX alum — Upadhyaya — who spent a decade in engineering roles at SpaceX before joining investment firm Cantos as a venture partner in 2022. He left sometime this year, according to his LinkedIn. At Cantos, Upadhyaya’s bets included satellite bus manufacturer Apex Space and motion control system developer Salient Motion, both startups headed by ex-SpaceX founders.

Spencer Hemphill, a finance executive, is rounding out the team. He’s coming from Sequoia, where he also spent ten years. He also departed sometime this year, leaving the firm as assistant controller.

Ochinero is just the latest SpaceX executive to move from the behemoth space company into venture investing. It’s popular enough for people to leave SpaceX to found other companies or invest in them that there’s a website dedicated to connecting the two groups. Other notable investors in the SpaceX-to-VC pipeline include Founders Fund’s Scott Nolan, who was a very early SpaceX employee, and Alpine Space Ventures’ Bulent Alton.

Avendus, KKR-backed top India venture advisor, in talks to raise $300 million for new fund | TechCrunch

Avendus, India’s leading investment bank for venture deals, is looking to raise about $300 million for its private equity unit, according to three sources familiar with the matter.

The Mumbai-based firm, backed by U.S. private equity giant KKR, has established itself as the top financial advisor in India, working with popular growth-stage startups including Zepto, Lenskart, Xpressbees, CaratLane and Atomberg on their funding rounds last year.

With its third private equity fund, Avendus plans to write larger checks more frequently, one of the sources said. The firm raised its second fund, amounting to around $185 million, in 2021. Its maiden fund was $50 million in size.

The sources requested anonymity to discuss private matters. An Avendus spokesperson declined to comment.

Avendus first gained prominence as India’s startup ecosystem first started to take shape, capitalizing on the fact that many of its well-known rivals — including Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and JP Morgan — initially paid less attention to the Indian market. That was partly due to deal sizes in the early days: Typically they were less than $30 million, not substantial enough to generate significant fees, making it less attractive for many banner names to engage.

But as the Indian startup ecosystem flourished in the past decade, becoming the third-largest in the world, it has attracted global giants, including SoftBank, Tiger Global and General Atlantic, as well as sovereign wealth funds like Temasek, GIC, ADIA, Khazanah, PIB and Mubadala, which have collectively poured tens of billions of dollars into startups small and large in India.

Avendus employs more than 150 bankers and was the top financial advisor in India last year. It provided services in over 30 deals, including merger and acquisition transactions, according to Venture Intelligence, a private market insight platform.

In the past decade, similar to financial advisors in other regions, Avendus has diversified its offerings, venturing into wealth management, credit financing and private equity. Last year, the firm also expanded its financial advisory services to the Southeast Asian region.

Now at the top of the App Store, the Eclipse App is a great companion for Monday's solar eclipse | TechCrunch

A well-designed app made to optimize your viewing of the total solar eclipse on Tuesday has surged to the top of the App Store. With 140,000+ lifetime downloads across iOS and Android, a simply named The Eclipse App offers a complementary experience for viewing the astronomical event, including cloud cover forecasts, guides that pinpoint when totality will occur at your exact location, and information about local events, parks and viewing sites in your area.

The app itself was born out of a partnership between independent space interest organization The Planetary Society and The Eclipse Company, a tech company formed around the time of the 2017 Great American Eclipse to help more people witness total solar eclipses.

The companies first put out a user-friendly eclipse map to help people find a viewing spot for the annual eclipse on October 14, 2023.

The Eclipse App, released in the U.S. and Canada in February, currently generates revenue through in-app purchases that allow users to pay $3 for a livestream. There are now roughly 9,800 paying users as of Monday, according to data from app intelligence firm Appfigures. The app began its App Store climb late on Sunday, gaining 35,000 downloads on the App Store and starting to move up the charts. Google estimates are delayed by a couple of days, the firm tell us, so the total downloads are likely well past 140,000 by now.

The app is currently ranked first in its category (Travel) and ninth Overall in the U.S. App Store and eighth in its category via Google Play.

What’s more, the app doesn’t appear to be gaining traction from any Apple Search Ads campaigns, but rather via organic searches.

Reviews are mostly positive on the App Store: There are 40 five-star reviews versus 22 one-star reviews, Appfigures says. There seems to be more consumer dissatisfaction with the Android version.

The company promises that the app will offer the ability to explore U.S. states and Canadian provinces across the path of totality as well as community events in search states. Plus, you can use the timer to know when the moment of totality is for your exact location, so you can put on your eclipse glasses and watch. You can also check your local forecast and subscribe to local events and check out other local points of interest. Parking information for many events is also included.

Another app from the same company, Solar Snap, also made it to No. 3 on the Top Charts for its handy photography assistant for shooting photos of the eclipse.

How to watch the eclipse, just in case

If you’re not able to watch the eclipse in person, or don’t have the special glasses, check out the official NASA livestream of the event below.
